We have just received our first shipment of the latest Wiggle exclusive brand – Lightweight! Manufactured by Carbon Sports, Lightweight offer an amazing range of truly irresistible wheels but the first thing that was being hunted out of the boxes was the Lightweight RD rear derailleur. £782.96 worth of Carbon perfection, hand crafted in to a gizmo to make your chain glide across your cassette! Richard from our merchandising team was the first to get his hands on it….
After unpacking it from its well packaged Lightweight Carbon Sports box, (which is heavier than the mech itself!) a crowd of wiggle guys gathered around salivating like Pavlov’s dog while the ladies were asking “Why?”, “What’s so special?”, “How much?” and after hearing the price stating “that’s ridiculous!!” But we at Wiggle were very impressed with what we were seeing. The Lightweight Rear mech is a work of art. It’s extremely light, almost completely carbon and just looks the business.
Being a racing cyclist, my first thought though was “what if I damaged the mech in a fall?” Lightweight have thought of this and designed this mech so that if you damaged any of the carbon parts, they can be easily changed. Small screws at both ends of the centre body ensure that you can replace either the part connecting to the frame, the centre body including the spring, and the barrel connected to the jockey wheel cages. It’s completely serviceable which is great to know when shelling out this kind of money on such an exquisite item.
The jockey wheels move with so much ease and feel exceptionally smooth when compared to other top end mechs, this is thanks to the KCNC ceramic bearings inside them.
If you did have to replace any part of this mech, then all you need to do is return it to Lightweight and they will do the rest, they offer full support on all their product, a welcome service when investing in such a quality item.
It’s a beautiful piece of performance carbon Exotica. Handmade by Lightweight over 3 days, it’s a serious consideration if you love bikes, carbon and creating unprecedented envy from your peers!
