Anthony Maynard Sportive 2009–Reading CC Honours a Lost Friend

Anthony, aged 25, tragically lost his life in July 2008 when struck by a vehicle whilst cycling in an evening club ride. He was an extremely popular member of Reading CC and is sorely missed by his friends at the cycling club. To reflect this and to celebrate Anthony’s love of cycling, this new sportive is to be held in his honour.
The inaugural Anthony Maynard Sportive, promoted by Reading Cycling Club, will provide a challenging ride through the Berkshire Downs on Sunday July 19th 2009.
“This will be a special event, a fitting cycling tribute to Anthony”
said Reading CC’s Chairman Adrian Lawson. He continued,
“Anthony was a very talented rider and sportives were one of his greatest loves. The event is being organised by his club mates to the highest standards and will keep Anthony’s memory alive in the best possible way.”
The Anthony Maynard Sportive is being run on a not for profit basis with proceeds being distributed to charities that reflect Anthony’s interests.
Entries are now being accepted for the inaugural Anthony Maynard Sportive to be held on Sunday July 19th 2009.
To ensure the best possible experience for this challenging ride through the Berkshire Downs, rider numbers will be limited to 500.

About The Event
The sportive route will take in the climbs and descents of the Berkshire Downs that he enjoyed on club runs with Reading CC. Starting from Theale, looping westward taking in the Valley of the Racehorse and the Vale of the White Horse, riders will have the option of 105km or 190km routes. The shorter course will include 1700 metres of ascent while the 20 climbs of the 190km route will provide a testing 2900 metres of ascent.
This will be a fast rolling and challenging event – Berkshire Downs riding at its best – and a welcome change to the brutal festivals of steep and gritty climbs that grace many sportives. Faster average speeds should await those who have prepared well.
The sportive starts and finishes at Theale Green School, with ample parking, changing rooms, showers and on site catering. Riders on both the 190km and 105km routes will share the early climbs as they head north and west over Apple Pie Hill and Yew Down towards Wantage.
Heading south and over the downs, the course splits at Lambourn with the longer route looping westwards reaching the top of the Marlborough Downs followed by the dramatic White Horse climbs of Walkers Hill and Pewsey Hill. The routes join for the final 40km past Acorn Ridge and over the “Boxford Alps” for a welcome return to Theale.
