1st Place Dragon XC

After a win last week I headed to North Wales for the round of the Dragon Cross Country Series with my confidence high. Although not at my best this time of year, my training has gone well and I was feeling good.

I needed to as well after I saw the start sheet and like me, there were a few tasty riders there using this seasonal opener to judge their form going into next weekends first round of the National Points Series. Although the sun was shinning, the temperature was pretty low and I was using my dhb Earnley base layer to keep the chill away during the faster shadowy sections through the trees.

As I had thought the start was fast and a small group formed at the front. We were all trying to tuck in on the windier sections, but by the end of the first lap it was down to two of us, myself and David Fletcher part of the British/Halfords team. We had a great battle over the first four laps of the five lap race increasing our lead over the rest of the chasing riders with myself leading the attack, and then with David joining me, then David got the gap over me through back markers and I had to chase him furiously before we came back together again.

With one lap to go, I heard his tyre blow behind me and our battle was over. It had been a good race up until that point, and I was genuinely disappointed with his bad luck. I wasn’t going to wait for him though because I knew behind us John Pugh would have been chasing hard, so I was pleased to be able to take the win.

Two wins in two races for the Focus Raven Pro, also a good pointer to my form for next week, and I’m looking forward to getting a good result for Team Wiggle.
