Well this is the World Championship Final, and it’s the most important race left in my 2010 schedule, for more reasons than one! Its not only a World Championship Series race, but it’s the final, in the Series and everyone in the world is here, so I wanted to race well against them, and doing it in the final would – in my mind – put all my bad luck in the World Champs Series worth it, but yet again, lady luck was just not on my side.
So, got to Budapest on the Wednesday, already not feeling 100% with a bad throat and then on Friday night I had to move rooms because I couldn’t stop going to the loo. Yep the poops! Great!
I was sharing a room with Jodie Swallow (great girl) and once I had made 3 trips to the loo, I had to leave her in peace. Thankfully she didn’t even realize I had gone, and was rather confused in the morning when the bed next to her was empty. I was the moved into quarantine at midnight, and stayed there until race day. Friday night was a bad night for me, hardly slept and stomach was churning, then Saturday I managed to keep some food down and my stomach and energy levels didn’t feel to bad, Sunday came and I felt ready to go!
Sunday morning I woke up and felt rearing to go, so off I went. I didn’t have the best swim, but not terrible. It was a wetsuit swim which I wasn’t too pleased with as it helps the slower swimmers, and I didn’t have the best place on the pontoon as my ranking was so low (that’s got to change). So I got out the water a bit further back than I would of liked, but managed to jump onto the back of the lead pack by the end of 10k. So with 30k to go, the lead pack was very jumpy with speed, and nerves from watching the men’s race. It was a hard ride but I was there and was ready to bolt on the run. Well my mind was ready, but again my legs weren’t. I got onto the run and went straight onto the back of Helen’s heels and immediately felt bad and I was only 600m in!!!!!!! I knew I was in for a long 10k, and that’s just what it was, I died!
I’m not blaming it on my stomach, even though it didn’t help, but my legs just weren’t with me. NOT A GOOD DAY AT THE OFFICE!! So angry!
So, what’s left? I’ve got 3 races left to finish off my 2010 season This weekend it’s the National Sprint Championships in Bryn Bach Park, Wales, then Dallas on 10th October, LifeTime Fitness non drafting race, and then finally The Challenger Barcelona Triathlon on 17th October, so I will try by best to end on a high.
This season for me – so far – has had more lows than I would have liked. My coach Michelle always says to me I’m still learning, but I don’t like learning in this way, it’s so hard!
I have got to end this blog by saying the biggest congratulations to all the G.B guys and gals who raced in the Elite, U23, Junior and Age Group levels. Alistair and Jonny Brownlee for their wins, Miss Helen Jenkins for her 4th overall ranking this year and Miss Vicky Holland for such a great year and her 6th in the race today.
If you’re at a loose end this weekend pop down to Bryn Bach, Tredegar loads of superstars racing the Nationals at such a fantastic venue. Hope to see you there.
