My aim this year is to be in shape a bit earlier than last year where I didn’t put in enough miles over the winter, so today I put my resolution to the test and headed out with the Regents Park Rouleurs towards Hertfordshire for a couple hours of riding. We managed to get 15km out until we hit a patch of black ice and had a collective wobble. We all managed to stay on and slowed down to debate turning back when a huge group of guys were heading back to London and said the roads were way to icy for riding and some of their guys had come off. Decision made! We rode back to Regents Park where the roads were ‘frosty’ rather than icy and did some laps. I was out for 2.5 hours which isn’t too bad. A friend cycling in Surrey told me that they stopped at a cafe which was full of cyclists with holes in their lycra from taking spills so we probably got off lucky.
I’m really excited about heading into my 3rd year as part of Team Wiggle and have hit the ground running so to speak really focusing on my weak spots in swimming, biking and running. The idea is to slow down, get the technique right and then build from there. I’m really motivated and committed right now so trying to capitalise on that as much as possible! My work is crazy busy at BE Unlimited / O2 which has played havoc with training over the past 3-4 months but I’m hoping things will settle down over the next few weeks.
Following the Nice – Cannes marathon in mid November I did very little training leading up to Christmas which was fine, I need a bit of down time at the end of each season and just kept things ticking over with 4-5 sessions a week, mainly to keep in shape for our ski trip in St Anton over Christmas and New Year. I was enjoying some ‘down time’ apres ski style at the Mooserwirt in St Anton in the Pic.

Right now I’m honing the race schedule and making sure the lessons learnt from last season are remembered and incorporated. The big one for me: training for Olympic distance triathlon is not compatible with training for grand fondo cycle races, I can’t do both well so I have to make a choice and Triathlon is always going to win :) Keep safe on the roads, watch out for ice and be careful!
Happy training.
