I’m writing this sitting in the sunshine at Lanzarote airport soaking up my final few rays before returning home. I’ve been training here for the past fortnight with Rachel Joyce at Sands Beach sports hotel in Costa Teguise. It has been an awesome couple of weeks and has definitely helped kickstart my training for the season ahead. Last time I blogged I’d not long returned to structured training and everything felt like a long hard slog. There’s nothing like a fortnight in Lanza to get you right back on track though! The hills and wind here love dishing out the beats so it now feels like my riding form isn’t too far away. Hill reps up Tabayesco certainly helped that cause…

Swimming with Rachel also gave me the boot up the backside I needed to get some pool fitness back. We swam at a 25m pool near to Sands Beach and I have to admit that often it was only the thought of the post-sesh jacuzzi that got me to the pool. Although I’ve been to Lanza to train many times before, I’d never stayed in Costa Teguise so it was fun exploring a few new routes and Sands Beach made for a perfect training base. I realise our daily routine of swim-eat-bike-eat-run-eat-sleep-repeat doesn’t appeal to all, but I thrive on it and the combination of having a world class training partner and a great sports hotel to stay at made a huge difference for me. We certainly took full advantage of the awesome breakfast and dinner buffets. I think they might regret ever letting triathletes loose in the restaurant, especially after long rides.

Once home (and re-acclimatised, brrrrrrr!), I’ll be looking ahead to the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon (3k swim/200k bike/20k run) on March 12 which should be great fun. The race season is only around the corner…

I’ll aim to blog again soon but in the meantime will no doubt be feeding my Twitter addiction…

Happy training all
