Think Miami and you typically think sunshine, blue skies, heat and stinking humidity so I’m sure I wasn’t the only one wondering what was going on come race day. Rain, wind, stormy weather? Hey, we want our money back! Despite less than pleasant conditions, Ironman 70.3 Miami was a fun race. The start was delayed because of lack of sunlight but we were soon thrashing our way through the water at Bayfront Park. It was pretty cool swimming along, breathing to my right and seeing Miami’s stunning skyline tucked neatly under my arm. I was pleased to leave the water in the front pack which included Leanda Cave and Nina Kraft. Big thanks to Dan Bullock at Swim for Tri – our continued work together is paying off.
Out on the bike, the weather conditions made the early miles treacherous what with downtown’s potholes, manhole covers and a few railroad tracks thrown in for good measure. As we got stuck into the 56-mile course, I never really felt too special and certainly had none of the magic or sparkle I had at Vegas or Augusta. I came into T2 in third place and headed out onto the run course hoping I’d get into a good run rhythm. I had good patches and bad and, like the bike, never felt like I was firing on all cylinders. Still, I was pleased to hang tough to gain another 70.3 podium finish and earn some $$$ and valuable points towards World Championship qualification for next year. I’m now third in the Vegas rankings which is setting me up nicely for 2012.
