As I’ve mentioned before, almost everyone here at Wiggle does some sort of sporting activities. We’ve got people who compete across the range of cycling disciplines, from cyclocross to fixed gear stunting (ok, that last one is just me trying not to fall off my bike), in triathlon, swimming and finally, we have a smallish group of runners. This is my main sport. Well, cricket is my main sport, but I’m not sure you can count the cricket that I play as competitive, unless you figure that standing around in the sun on a Saturday afternoon requires extra skill and dedication. If so, time to fit me for a medal. My preferred distance is 10km (I’m way too undermotivated to run a marathon – our Ordinary Runners, Paul, Danielle, Mike and Dave never cease to amaze me), and last weekend, a few of us competed in the Chichester 10k. Suffice it to say, it was hard, for me at least – there was an extra hill at the 7km mark that wasn’t there last year, and I ended up running about five minutes slower than my previous mark. As it’s nearly my birthday, though, I might soon be rewarding myself with a new pair of running shoes.
Anyways, as I was looking around on the internet for reactions to the race (and an excuse to discount a poor time), I came across the subject of this week’s WBBW – the Southern Running Guide.
It is, as the name suggests, a combination of run listings in the South (apologies, northern brethren!) and reviews, news, results and pictures. I’m not in the Chichester roundup, thankfully, but they do seem to cover most every event that happens from Cornwall to Kent, even sending crack reporters all the way up to London.
From a runner’s perspective, this site is a great resource – there are a number of listings services, and an even larger number of races, big and small, many of which are not picked up. What Southern Running Guide seem to have managed is to get a pretty decent coverage of running events across the whole of the South (not just down Sussex way) – I’ve already picked out a couple of events in which I’m going to compete (the Kew Gardens 10k in September sounds particularly appealing).
You’ll like this if: You enjoy running enough to want to take part in a race (if you’ve never tried it, you should, by the way – I always enjoy racing, no matter how badly I do).
