To help you beat the tax Wiggle is offering 30% off Sports Nutrition between Thursday 27th September and Thursday 4th October. Be quick as after this, all nutrition sold throughout Wiggle will include a statutory 20% tax added to all nutrition products.
Why is this tax being introduced?
Back in March the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced that from 1st October 2012 sports nutrition products would be subject to a 20% tax. This brings us in-line with most other EU countries who already apply this tax.
Is the tax on nutrition across all nutrition products?
The official document outlining the tax is very wordy. Readers are left confused and unsure about which products will see an increase in price. We’ve summarised the key points to try to at least offer a basic overview.
What nutritional products include the additional 20% tax?
- The tax will affect products that are ready-mixed or ready-to-mix. For example, powders and concentrates.
- If you’re using something that is designed to improve performance and recovery for strength, power or endurance then chance are it’s going to be going up in price on 1st October. Think protein powders, carb drinks, creatine…
What is excluded from the tax?
If it’s a meal replacement then it’s exempt from the tax. This is why there’s a grey area.
It basically means that it’s not about the nutritional composition of the product but why an individual is actually using it. At which point, given that we tailor usage to our own requirements, what counts as a meal replacement for one person might be a snack for another person. See the grey area?
What can you do to avoid the additional 20% tax on ready made nutrition?
This change will affect a lot of items that we sell but all Wiggle customers can be sure of one thing : even after the 1st October we will continue in our efforts to offer competitive prices on a great range of nutrition products.
