This weekend Wiggle made an unusual deal when it agreed to swap a Twitter follower’s used car for a brand new bike. On Saturday we handed over a Mekk Poggio carbon road bike to Jonny Heneghan, in return for his old MG!
A few weeks ago, photographer Jonny Heneghan, from Godley, Greater Manchester (twitter name @shotbyjohnson) took the bold move of contacting us asking if we would swap his old car for the Mekk bike. We called Jonny’s bluff by replying, “Sounds like a fair trade.” Since the deal was made we’ve received offers of various other trades, from old Nokia mobile phones to cats, wives & mother in laws!
Jonny’s interest in the sport had been spurred on by romance – he started cycling to work in order to save money to marry his fiancée, Jennifer. “petrol prices are sky high and my insurance doesn’t seem to come down all that much, so I started cycling again about 6 months ago” Losing over 3 stone & feeling inspired to train harder and ride longer distances, He needed a better bike but didn’t want to reduce the wedding fund ” I didn’t have the money and I barely used my car any more so I thought I’d try and sort out a trade.”
When he told his friends and family Jonny said they “couldn’t understand why I would swap my car for a bike, but once I explained the money I will save it made sense. My Fiancé was dead happy as she knew how much I wanted a road bike but was holding off to save up for the wedding.”
Jonny got the idea for the request after he saw a news article on a chap who managed to blag a free holiday via Facebook. “ My Fiancé’s Brother and I just thought ‘let’s tweet a bike shop and see if they’re game!’ I decided I wanted the Mekk & with Wiggle being one of the biggest bike retailers & a supplier of Mekk bikes they were the logical choice!” Whilst this trade may be a one off it’s not unusual to hear from Wiggle customers who have swapped their cars for bikes as a lifestyle choice & the retailer has seen a boom in sales of hi-viz clothing, lights, helmets and hybrid bikes in the past few years as the number of cycle commuters rises.
Jonny collected his new MEKK bike & KASK helmet last Saturday from the Wiggle HQ in Portsmouth.
Jonny’s request struck a chord with us here at Wiggle, many of us here have swapped our cars for bikes to try & cut our commuting costs & keep fit, it’s much better than sitting in traffic wasting petrol & it’s great to be able to help him do the same!

Better than CRC, had my bike nicked and asked Chain reaction Cycles for a discount on a bike while waiting for the insurance to come though. Have bought loads off em in the past. Didnt want to know. As for the MG swap for the bike, MG’s are worthless, I think the customer got a good deal!
